Sword Valley (Kılıçlar)
Kılıçlar — Sword Valley — is the most adventurous of the Göreme valleys: narrow, blade-like ridges and tight slot passages carved through the rock, just north of the Göreme Open-Air Museum.

What you'll see
- Knife-edge ridges. Thin 'sword' fins of tuff that give the valley its name.
- Slot passages. Narrow cuts and tunnels where the path squeezes between rock walls.
- Near the Open-Air Museum. Easy to combine with a visit to Göreme's famous cave churches.
How to get there
Start near the Göreme Open-Air Museum and follow the valley toward Çavuşin. It is steeper and rougher underfoot than the other Göreme valleys.
Best time to walk it
Afternoon, with good light in the slots. Spring and autumn are best; the rock can be slippery after rare rain.
What to bring
- Water — there is none on the trail
- Sturdy shoes with grip for scrambly sections
- A torch for the slot passages
- Care in the narrows if it has rained
Frequently asked questions
Is Sword Valley harder than the other valleys?
A little — it is rated moderate, with some scrambling, narrow slots and a rougher path than Rose, Red or Love.
Why is it called Sword Valley?
Kılıçlar means 'swords' — the valley is full of thin, blade-like fins and ridges of rock.
Can I combine it with the Open-Air Museum?
Yes — the trail starts beside the Göreme Open-Air Museum, so it pairs naturally with a visit to the cave churches.
Is it suitable for children?
Older, sure-footed children are fine with care; the slots and scrambles make it less suited to small kids than Love or Meskendir.
