Red Valley (Kızılçukur)
Kızılçukur — Red Valley — has the most famous sunset terrace in Cappadocia and, at first light, one of the best spots to watch hundreds of balloons lift off. Deep red-ochre ridges, an easy 3.8 km walk, and tea stalls along the rim.

What you'll see
- The sunset terrace. Çay stalls line the rim; the ochre walls blaze red as the sun drops. Arrive an hour early in summer for a seat.
- Dawn balloon viewpoint. At first light, hundreds of balloons rise over the valley — a classic sunrise photograph.
- Red rock ridges. The most intensely coloured rock in the region, threaded with old cave churches.
How to get there
Start from Çavuşin village (a 10-minute drive or dolmuş from Göreme). The ridge walk is short; for sunrise, most people drive up to the viewpoint or join a small tour. It links directly to Rose Valley.
Best time to walk it
Twice a day. Sunset for the red glow from the terrace; dawn for the balloons. Spring and autumn are best — clear, mild and prime balloon season.
What to bring
- Warm layer for a dawn visit — mornings are cold even in summer
- Water and a torch
- Cash for the çay stalls (lira)
- A camera with spare battery
Frequently asked questions
Why is it called Red Valley?
The tuff here is unusually rich in iron oxide, so the ridges are a deep red-ochre that intensifies at sunset — hence Kızılçukur, 'red hollow'.
Is Red Valley good for watching balloons?
Yes — its rim is one of the best dawn balloon-watching spots in Cappadocia, looking back over the Göreme valleys at first light.
How hard is the walk?
Easy — about 3.8 km of gentle ridge path. It is usually combined with Rose Valley into one loop.
Do I need a guide?
No — the path is clear in daylight. For a pre-dawn balloon visit, a guide or tour helps you find the viewpoint in the dark.
