Getting Around Cappadocia on Foot and by Dolmuş — Trailheads & Returns

Cappadocia is not a linear trail. The eight walks on this site radiate from Göreme, most of them one-way, and the question walkers ask more than any other is not "how hard is it?" but "how do I get back?". This guide answers that for every valley, using the start and end points, distances and access notes from the same data behind the valley pages, and adds the distances between the towns so you can decide when to wait for a dolmuş and when to simply walk.

A dolmuş, if you have not met one, is a shared minibus that runs a fixed route and leaves when it is reasonably full. In Cappadocia the ones a walker cares about run from Göreme's small bus station to the neighbouring towns. Fares are paid to the driver in cash; they change often enough that we do not print them.

All eight walks: where they start, where they end, how you get back

Distances and times are measured along the GPS track of each walk. The Göreme figures in the table use the start points recorded in that data; the Open-Air Museum, which three of the walks use as a reference, is itself about a kilometre east of the town centre.

The three returns you will use most

Çavuşin. Rose and Sword both finish here, and Red starts here. The Red Valley page describes Çavuşin as a 10-minute drive or dolmuş from Göreme. If you arrive after the last dolmuş, the village is about 3.1 km from the Open-Air Museum in a straight line, so walking back along the road is realistic in daylight; with a head-torch it is still a road, not a valley, and you will not get lost.

Uçhisar. Pigeon and Zemi both climb to the citadel town. The Pigeon Valley data records a dolmuş of about 10 minutes between Uçhisar and Göreme, and the Uçhisar page gives the road distance as about 5 km. Walking back down Pigeon Valley is a pleasant option if you have the legs: the descent is easier than the climb, and it puts you back in the centre of Göreme rather than at the bus station.

A valley rim with a car park. Red Valley ends at the Kızılçukur viewpoint, and Love Valley at its panorama on the Göreme–Uçhisar road; both have car parks where taxis wait in season. From the Red Valley rim, though, the best return is on foot: down Meskendir to the Kaya road, which starts about 300 m from the Open-Air Museum. The dolmuş links from Göreme, as far as we can vouch for them

We only describe the routes the pages on this site describe, and we do not print timetables, because they change with the season.

• Göreme ↔ Uçhisar — a dolmuş of about 10 minutes (Pigeon Valley data); about 5 km by road.
• Göreme ↔ Çavuşin — a 10-minute drive or dolmuş (Red Valley page).
• Göreme ↔ Avanos — the Avanos page records regular dolmuş services to Göreme and Ürgüp; about 15 minutes from Göreme.
• Göreme ↔ Ürgüp — the Ürgüp page records frequent dolmuş services; about 20 minutes from Göreme.
• Göreme ↔ Ortahisar — a taxi or dolmuş reaches it easily; about 10 minutes from both Göreme and Ürgüp (Ortahisar page).
• Göreme ↔ Nevşehir — regular buses, which is also the link to the long-distance coach station (Göreme page).

Ask at your hotel or at the bus station for that week's first and last departures before you commit to a one-way walk that ends at sunset. On the Rose–Red side, a taxi from Çavuşin is the fallback; on the Uçhisar side, walking down is.

Walking between the towns

Because the walks loop back towards the same handful of towns, it is worth knowing how far apart those towns are. The figures below are straight-line distances between the coordinates in our valley and heritage-site data — the Open-Air Museum for Göreme, the castle rocks for Uçhisar and Ortahisar, the church of St John the Baptist for Çavuşin — so treat them as minimums. The paths that actually connect the towns are longer, and the valley walks in the table above are the good ways to cover them.

The practical reading: Göreme to Uçhisar on foot is Pigeon Valley (4.2 km) or Zemi (5.4 km); Göreme to Çavuşin is Rose (4.5 km) or Sword (4.0 km); and Ortahisar is close enough to the Red Valley rim that a walker based there can reach the sunset terrace without passing through Göreme at all, although the paths from that side are not on this site and you will need the offline map.

Taxis and the one-way problem

A taxi to a trailhead is the standard Cappadocian answer to a one-way walk, and for Red Valley at dawn or Sword Valley from the far side it is often the only sensible one. Agree the destination — "Kızılçukur car park" or "Çavuşin, old village" — and have the hotel note it in Turkish if you are unsure. For a sunset finish, arrange the pick-up before you set off rather than hoping to find a car on the rim in the dark.

Ihlara is the exception

Everything above is about the seven Göreme-area walks. Ihlara Valley is about 1.5 hours away by road, in Aksaray province, and the valley data is blunt about it: there is no dolmuş to the trailhead from Göreme, and transport back from Selime or Belisırma is awkward, so book a return taxi in advance or come with a car or a tour. Three car-free days, joined up

Put the table to work and the logistics disappear into the walking. This is the shape the itineraries page suggests, with the transport filled in.

• Day one, Göreme. Morning at the Open-Air Museum, a 15-minute walk from the centre. Mid-afternoon, walk up Rose Valley to the rim, along Red Valley to the sunset terrace, and back down through Meskendir to the Kaya road — no vehicle at all. If you would rather not do the tunnels in the dark, drop to Çavuşin instead and take the dolmuş.
• Day two, the west side. Dawn on foot at the Love Valley panorama, 30 minutes up the Uçhisar road, then the valley floor. Late afternoon, Pigeon Valley from the western edge of Göreme up to Uçhisar for sunset from the castle; dolmuş of about 10 minutes back, or walk down.
• Day three, shade. Zemi Valley from the Open-Air Museum to Uçhisar in the morning while the wooded floor is cool; dolmuş back to Göreme; Sword Valley from the museum to Çavuşin in the late afternoon if you still have legs, dolmuş home. Or swap the whole day for Ihlara by tour, which is the one day a walker here does not organise on foot.

Every leg above is a walk from the table, a dolmuş link from the list, or the museum road. The only booking is the Ihlara day, and the only thing to check each morning is the last minibus back.

Before you set off

• Download the offline map in the free app. Five of the seven Göreme-area walks carry a warning about missing or misleading signs.
• Check the last dolmuş back from Çavuşin or Uçhisar before a late start; carry a head-torch if you plan to finish at sunset.
• Carry your own water: only Ihlara has water along the route, and the Zemi stream is seasonal and not for drinking.
