Rose Valley (Güllüdere)

Güllüdere — Rose Valley — is the classic Cappadocia sunset walk. Soft pink-and-gold tuff cliffs, hidden Byzantine cave churches, and a path that glows rose in the last hour of light. An easy 4.5 km from Göreme to Çavuşin, it links naturally with Red Valley next door.

What you'll see

How to get there

The trailhead is a 10-minute walk from the centre of Göreme, up the Open-Air Museum road. The walk finishes at Çavuşin village, from where a dolmuş (minibus) or short taxi returns you to Göreme. Many walkers link Rose + Red Valley and loop back through Meskendir Valley.

Best time to walk it

Late afternoon. The cliffs are at their most photogenic about 30 minutes before sunset. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are ideal; summer afternoons are hot with almost no shade.

About 4.5 km from Göreme to Çavuşin, roughly 2 hours at a relaxed pace with photo stops. It is rated easy.

Can I combine Rose and Red Valley?

Yes — they share a junction and are almost always walked together as a 7–9 km sunset loop, returning via Meskendir Valley to Göreme.

Are the cave churches free?

The small churches inside Rose Valley are open and free; the larger Göreme Open-Air Museum nearby has a ticket. Bring a torch and tread gently — the frescoes are fragile.
